The British Embassy in Bangkok marked the 170th anniversary of UK-Thailand diplomatic relations with a series of nationwide events culminating in a major celebration on April 1, officials said. The campaign, which included activities in Phuket, highlighted shared history and future cooperation between the two countries.

High-profile events and regional outreach
The anniversary campaign featured royal participation, with King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida presiding over a Royal Marines concert, and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul opening the embassy’s commemorative football match in Bangkok.
British Ambassador Mark Gooding made history at London’s Wat Buddhapadipa by becoming the first foreign envoy to present kathin robes alongside Thailand’s ambassador, representing the Thai monarch. The UK also hosted a major Buddhist ceremony in Thailand for the first time, partnering with Wat Mahathat for a large kathina event.
A 13-province roadshow brought embassy officials to southern, northern, eastern, and northeastern regions, including stops in Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai. The British Fair, held at Big C Supercenter locations, drew over 300 attendees at its Ratchada finale and featured music, prizes, and a modern English-style pub quiz.
The closing ceremony at Gaysorn Urban Resort also celebrated the 80th anniversary of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand (BCCT), which oversees £7.7 billion in bilateral trade and is the largest British chamber in Asia.
