Five popular Thai destinations, including Phuket, have been named among the ‘Best of the Best Destinations’ in the 2024 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards, recognising their global appeal to travellers in a range of categories.
Phuket secured 18th place on the list of Top 25 Destinations – World, highlighting its status as Thailand’s largest island and a major draw for beach enthusiasts and divers. The annual awards, based on millions of reviews and opinions from Tripadvisor users worldwide, spotlight locations that have consistently received high ratings for accommodations, restaurants, and activities.
Bangkok was also featured prominently, ranking 15th globally and 5th within Asia on the Top Destinations lists. The capital city was praised for its unique combination of golden palaces, floating markets, and distinctive spires, reflecting its enduring popularity with international visitors. Meanwhile, Chiang Mai made the Asian Top Destinations list at 16th place, underlining Northern Thailand’s continued attraction for culture and food seekers.
Phuket’s culinary scene received further recognition, taking 10th spot on the Top 25 Food Destinations – World list. The island’s gastronomic reputation is bolstered by its inclusion in the Michelin Guide Thailand, with the seventh edition released in December 2023. Phuket also holds the title of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, a testament to its vibrant local food culture and creative culinary offerings. Chiang Mai followed closely, placing 17th on the Food Destinations list.
For tourists and residents in Phuket, these accolades reinforce the island’s position as a top travel and dining destination, likely to attract even greater numbers of international visitors. The recognition is expected to benefit local businesses, from hotels and restaurants to tour operators and markets, by increasing global visibility.
Elsewhere in Thailand, Pattaya was named 7th on the Trending Destinations – World list, reflecting a surge in interest for its beaches along the Gulf of Thailand. Khao Lak, located just 80 kilometres north of Phuket, was placed 6th in the Honeymoon Destinations category. The listing noted Khao Lak’s tranquil atmosphere, family-friendly activities, and renowned scuba diving opportunities in the Similan Islands.
Additionally, Bangkok was recognised for its efforts in sustainable tourism, ranking 11th among the world’s Sustainable Destinations. This highlights Thailand’s ongoing commitment to balancing tourism growth with environmental responsibility.
Tripadvisor’s annual awards serve as a barometer for travel trends and preferences worldwide. With several Thai destinations earning top honours across multiple categories, local tourism officials and businesses are expected to capitalise on this momentum as the high season continues.
