The British Embassy in Thailand marked the close of its 170th anniversary celebrations with a major event in central Bangkok on April 1, drawing senior officials, diplomats, and business leaders from across the country. The year-long campaign, which highlighted the enduring UK-Thailand relationship, included activities in Phuket and 12 other provinces, focusing on shared values and deepening cooperation.
Milestones and Regional Engagement
The embassy’s 170th anniversary programme featured a nationwide roadshow led by Ambassador Mark Gooding, with stops in Phuket, Krabi, and Surat Thani, as well as northern, eastern, and northeastern provinces. Events included meetings with governors, universities, and local business communities to emphasize environmental, commercial, and people-to-people ties.
A British Fair was held at each location, offering live music, prizes, and modern English-style pub quizzes. The final fair at Big C Place Ratchada in Bangkok drew over 300 participants, including the city’s governor.
Diplomatic milestones included the ambassador’s historic participation in a Kathin ceremony at London’s Buddhapadipa Temple and the first major UK-hosted Buddhist event in Thailand. The closing event also marked the 80th anniversary of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand, which reported £7.7 billion in bilateral trade and remains the country’s oldest foreign chamber and the largest British chamber in Asia.
