A severe fuel shortage and rising food prices have created a double crisis for border communities in Surin province, officials confirmed on March 30. Petrol stations near the Thai border continue to restrict fuel sales, with several locations running dry and prices climbing, impacting farmers and rural residents. Impact on Rural Livelihoods and Official Response

Farmers in Sangkha district and rubber tappers in Buachet face mounting difficulties transporting goods, as some stations have no fuel while others limit purchase quantities. The cost of consumer goods has also increased in tandem with fuel prices, compounding financial pressure on households with stagnant incomes.

District chief Boonliang Riamthong, accompanied by local officials, has begun daily inspections of fuel stocks and sales volumes to deter hoarding. Residents report that many are struggling to afford basic necessities and have called on the government to address both fuel and food price hikes. Some villagers expressed skepticism over official assurances of adequate fuel supply, noting persistent shortages and uncertainty about when relief might come.
