Foreign Man Assaults Girlfriend and Tuk Tuk Driver in Phuket

A foreign man physically assaulted his girlfriend and a tuk tuk driver in Patong district, Phuket, on March 16, drawing widespread attention after video footage was posted online. The incident occurred on Thaweewong Road, a busy area popular with tourists. The tuk tuk driver, who uses the Facebook account Ko Nus Ok, shared the video on March 13, sparking a strong reaction on Thai social media.

Incident on Thaweewong Road Caught on Video

According to the tuk tuk driver, the couple had requested a stop at a roadside pharmacy so the woman could buy medicine. The driver reported that the man became angry over the length of her absence and attacked her upon her return. In the video, the man is seen pushing the woman onto the seat, grabbing her by the neck, and slapping her face. The woman tried to defend herself but was unable to escape his grip before the video ended.

Tuk Tuk Driver Intervenes and Faces Assault

The video led to criticism of the tuk tuk driver for filming instead of intervening. In response, the driver explained that he had attempted to intervene multiple times and was kicked by the foreign man, who told him to stay out of what he described as a personal matter. The driver stated that he eventually managed to control the situation, removed the man from the vehicle, and transported the woman safely to her hotel. He recorded the incident to have evidence in case his vehicle sustained damage and noted that some parts were affected, though he did not specify if a police report was filed.

Previous Incidents and Ongoing Concerns

This assault in Phuket follows a similar case in Pattaya in November 2022, where a foreign man attacked his Thai girlfriend in Nong Prue district, resulting in injuries and ongoing abuse over four months. The latest incident has renewed discussions about the safety of women and the responsibilities of bystanders in Thailand’s tourist hotspots. Authorities have not yet commented on whether further action will be taken in the Phuket case. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
