A grand finale event in Bangkok on April 4, 2026, marked the culmination of year-long celebrations for the 170th anniversary of Thai-British relations, with activities spanning from January 2025. The campaign, which included a stop in Phuket, highlighted shared culture and values while strengthening diplomatic, business, and community ties between the United Kingdom and Thailand.
Milestone Events and Regional Engagement
The UK Embassy organized a series of major events throughout the year under the themes of religion, monarchy, and nation, emphasizing enduring friendship and deepening cooperation. Ambassador Mark Gooding became the first foreign envoy to jointly present the Kathina robe with Thailand’s ambassador at Wat Buddhapadipa in London.
For the first time, the UK co-hosted a major Buddhist event in Thailand, partnering with Wat Mahathat for a large-scale robe-offering ceremony. The 170th anniversary roadshow reached 13 provinces, including Phuket, Krabi, and Surat Thani in the south, as well as Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Chiang Mai in the north.
Officials met with governors, universities, businesses, and local communities during the tour. The finale also celebrated the 80th anniversary of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand, the country’s oldest foreign chamber and the largest British chamber in Asia.
