Her Majesty the Queen participated in the 37th International Phuket King’s Cup Regatta today, joining the prestigious sailing event held at Karon Beach, Phuket, from 1–6 December 2025. The Queen attended a morning briefing at Beyond Kata in the Karon Subdistrict, Muang District, at 08:45, before competing in the regatta’s IRC Zero Class with her team, Vayu THA 72.
This year’s regatta brings together 120 boats and 365 competitors from over ten countries, including Australia, Japan, Sweden, Belgium, China, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, and France. The event, a highlight of Phuket’s annual sporting calendar, features 76 dinghy boats, 14 S/V boats, six disabled boats, and 38 keelboats, all vying for the Royal Trophy of His Majesty the King.
Her Majesty the Queen’s participation is notable, as she serves as the helm for Vayu THA 72, one of three vessels in the IRC Zero Class, representing Thailand and Australia. In this role, the Queen is responsible for navigating and steering the sailboat, analyzing wind direction, and ensuring swift maneuvers during the long-distance race. The IRC Zero Class is recognized for its demanding nature, requiring competitors to demonstrate strength, precision, and seamless team coordination in the face of changing wind and wave conditions.
The regatta’s opening was attended by prominent figures, including Mr. Kevin Robert Wittkraft, President of the Organizing Committee; Admiral Pairote Fuangchan, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy; Admiral Somprasong Nilsamai, President of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage; and executive directors of Kata Group Resorts. Organizers, athletes, and officials gathered to welcome the Queen and mark the significance of the event.
For Phuket residents and tourists, the regatta offers both a competitive sporting spectacle and a boost to local tourism. Crowds have gathered along Karon Beach to witness the races, with local businesses reporting increased activity as visitors flock to the area. The event also introduces advanced race visualization technology, with Sailfish equipment enabling spectators to follow the competition through simulated views, a feature set to be used at upcoming SEA Games sailing events.
As the regatta continues through 6 December, attention remains on the Queen’s performance and the international competitors. Organizers encourage residents and visitors to participate in the festivities, with the event expected to further enhance Phuket’s reputation as a premier destination for international sailing and tourism.
