WWF Thailand and partners are inviting Phuket residents, businesses, and communities nationwide to join the “Turn Off the Lights... Let the Earth Rest” campaign for Earth Hour’s 20th anniversary on March 28, 2026. The event calls for switching off non-essential lights for 60 minutes at 8:30 p.m. local time, as part of the global “Give an Hour for Earth” initiative.

Earth Hour’s Global Impact and 2026 Activities

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007 with 2.2 million people and 2,000 businesses participating, and now spans over 190 countries and territories. WWF aims for the 2026 edition to be “The Biggest Hour for Earth,” emphasizing broad participation to promote responsible energy use and drive progress toward a low-carbon economy. According to WWF’s Living Planet Report 2024, monitored wildlife populations have declined by 73% globally between 1970 and 2020, highlighting urgent environmental risks. In Thailand, electricity demand continues to rise with economic and urban growth, directly increasing greenhouse gas emissions, WWF Thailand said. Recent Earth Hour efforts in Bangkok reduced electricity costs by over 620,000 baht and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 58.6 tons in a single hour. This year’s main event in Thailand runs from March 24–29 at Nextopia, Siam Paragon, featuring environmental documentaries, creative workshops, and interactive energy experiences across six lifestyle themes.
