Phuket police seized 2,967 methamphetamine tablets at the Tha Chatchai checkpoint late on March 24, 2026, after discovering the drugs concealed in the engine compartment of a red Mazda 3 sedan. Two suspects from Ao Luek District, Krabi Province, were arrested at the northern gateway to Phuket during the operation.
Police Operation at Tha Chatchai Checkpoint Nets Major Drug Haul
The interception was led by Pol. Col. Khundech Na Nongkhai, Superintendent of Tha Chatchai Police Station, with Pol. Lt. Col. Ratchaphat Buakaew and Pol. Lt. Col. Somkiat Wantae assisting. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle, which resulted in the discovery of nearly 3,000 yaba pills hidden under the hood. The sedan was stopped as part of routine inspections at the checkpoint, located approximately 50 kilometres north of Phuket Town. Both suspects were immediately detained on site.
Legal Proceedings and Evidence Handling Following Arrests
After the arrest, authorities informed the two individuals of their legal rights and formally charged them with possession of a Category 1 narcotic. The suspects, along with the confiscated methamphetamine tablets and vehicle, were transported to Tha Chatchai Police Station for further processing. The case is now under investigation, with officers examining possible links to drug distribution networks in southern Thailand. Police have not released the names of the suspects pending further inquiries.
