Thailand will end its “warning before fine” approach and begin strict enforcement of all traffic laws nationwide, including in Phuket, starting April 1st, officials announced on March 27th. The Royal Thai Police confirmed that the leniency period, which began in January, concludes March 31st, and emphasized that the new measures are not an April Fool’s joke.
Phase 1 Warning Period and Enforcement Data
During Phase 1, traffic police used the Police Ticket Management (PTM) system to issue 196,028 warnings to motorists instead of immediate fines. The initiative aimed to educate drivers and encourage compliance with traffic regulations. Authorities stated that this approach was introduced to prepare the public for stricter enforcement and reduce confusion once penalties begin.
Focus on High-Risk Violations and Safety Concerns
Phase 2 will target 10 key violations linked to serious accidents, such as speeding, drunk driving, and abrupt lane changes. Police will also monitor road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver behavior more closely. Deputy Government Spokesperson Airin Phanrit cited statistics from the New Year holiday showing over 1,500 accidents and 272 deaths, with many cases involving these high-risk behaviors. The government and police have urged all motorists to adjust their driving habits immediately to avoid penalties and help lower Thailand’s high traffic fatality rates.
