A woman initially believed to be a foreign national was identified as Thai after writing insulting words about Thais on signs posted in a well-known Phuket mall on April 4. Police said the 32-year-old, who works at a shop on Bangla Road in Patong, was located after a 1 minute 46 second video of the incident circulated online. She was found to have no fixed residence.
Investigation and Motive
Patong police reviewed CCTV and interviewed mall security and witnesses to clarify the situation. The woman admitted to writing harsh language on paper and attaching it to her bag and in a restroom.
She told officers she acted out of fear her bag would be stolen again, after losing it twice previously. The statements contradicted earlier social media claims that the woman was Khmer and had caused a disturbance targeting Thais.
