Patong’s wastewater treatment system is costing the municipality 2.2 million baht per month, while monthly income stands at only 1.5 million baht, officials in Phuket said on April 4. The Pollution Control Department (PCD) is proposing new service fees to address the shortfall, seeking approval from the National Environment Board.

Fee Structure and Financial Gap

Patong’s current wastewater fee averages 5 baht per cubic metre for 2024–2025, with septic waste collection charged at 250 baht per cubic metre, and 150 baht for volumes under half a cubic metre. These rates were set to balance resident costs with operational expenses, according to the PCD.

Despite these measures, the municipality faces a monthly deficit of about 700,000 baht. Officials attribute the gap to incomplete fee collection coverage and rates that do not reflect the true cost of waste management.

System Expansion and Environmental Concerns

Patong’s wastewater treatment plant began operations in January 2023, funded by the Environmental Fund under national law. The facility was built to serve the high-density population and tourist influx in the area, aiming to protect marine environments and public health.

The PCD’s proposal for revised service fees will be reviewed by the National Environment Board, with the goal of ensuring the financial sustainability of Patong’s waste management system.
