Phuket Airport boosts Songkran safety amid tourism dip

Phuket International Airport has stepped up safety measures for Songkran 2026 as officials respond to a downturn in tourist arrivals this April. The airport’s management announced on April 9 that additional screening and crowd control protocols are now in place, aiming to ensure passenger safety during Thailand’s peak holiday period.

Enhanced Security and Passenger Flow

Airport authorities have deployed extra security staff at all terminals, focusing on managing increased domestic traffic expected for Songkran. The number of screening checkpoints has been expanded to reduce bottlenecks and maintain orderly movement, officials said.

Passenger data from April’s first week showed a 12% decrease in international arrivals compared to the same period last year. Despite the drop, airport management reported that daily domestic flights remain near capacity, with most inbound travelers coming from Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

New signage and announcements in Thai, English, and Chinese have been installed to guide visitors through revised entry and exit procedures. Airport management is also coordinating with local police and emergency services to monitor crowd density and respond quickly to any incidents.
