The Phuket Provincial Commerce Office has tightened price controls as rising fuel costs drive up expenses across the island, officials confirmed on March 30. The office is requiring businesses in Phuket to justify any price increases with clear documentation and has expanded discount programs to help residents manage higher living costs.

Stricter Oversight and Transparency Measures

Woranit Aphiratjirawong, Provincial Commerce Officer, stated that the recent surge in oil prices is pressuring consumer goods markets. Inspections have increased, with officials mandating clear price labeling to enhance transparency for shoppers.

Businesses are now required to link any price adjustments directly to energy-related cost increases and provide detailed explanations. Modest price rises have already occurred for eggs and some agricultural products, attributed to reduced yields during the hot season.

Retail Price Stability and Discount Initiatives

Despite cost pressures, most retail prices for consumer goods remain stable, officials said. Many businesses are absorbing higher transport costs to minimize the impact on the public, but further price increases may be necessary if conditions persist.

Imported products such as plastics, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies are expected to become more expensive due to shipping delays and increased international costs. The Commerce Office has expanded the Blue Flag Discount Program with local administrative organizations, offering essential goods at below-market prices to help residents cope with ongoing economic volatility.
