Phuket’s three main reservoirs currently contain approximately 12 million cubic meters of water, representing 52% of total storage capacity. This reserve is projected to last about 100 days, covering local needs until late June even if dry conditions persist. The Provincial Waterworks Authority operates eight treatment plants, producing 126,720 cubic meters of potable water daily, with an additional 100,000 cubic meters per day sourced from irrigation channels and private suppliers. Meteorological forecasts from the West Coast Center predict rainfall will resume between April 20 and May 1, which is expected to replenish supplies before reserves are depleted.
Emergency Measures and Long-Term Water Security Projects
The Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has identified 2,647 groundwater and shallow wells across the island as backup sources in the event of severe shortages. Ongoing infrastructure projects include the Phang Nga–Phuket waterworks expansion and feasibility studies for diverting water from Ratchaprapa Dam in Surat Thani, aimed at increasing long-term supply. Local administrations are conducting surveys of production capacity and private-sector resources, while community-level initiatives are underway to secure additional backup options. Governor Nirut has directed all agencies to develop a comprehensive water database for real-time monitoring and coordinated management.
