Phuket officials turn to food waste tech

Phuket officials have announced the introduction of new food waste technology at the city’s main landfill, effective March 27, 2026. The initiative aims to address the growing volume of organic waste generated by hotels, restaurants, and households across Phuket, officials said.

Pilot Program Targets Hotel Sector

The first phase of the project will focus on large hotels, which account for over 40% of Phuket’s food waste, according to the Phuket Environmental Office. Participating hotels will receive on-site composting units capable of processing up to 500 kilograms of waste per day.

Officials said the pilot program will run for six months before expanding to other sectors. Training sessions for hotel staff on using the new equipment are scheduled throughout April.

The technology is designed to reduce landfill pressure and produce compost suitable for local agriculture. Environmental officers estimate that successful implementation could cut organic waste sent to landfill by 25% within the first year.
