Phuket steps up fight against illegal labour

Phuket authorities launched a coordinated crackdown on illegal labour on 25 March 2026, targeting unregistered foreign workers across the island. The operation, led by the Phuket Provincial Employment Office, focused on construction sites and hospitality businesses in Patong, Kathu, and Thalang districts. Officials said the campaign aims to address rising concerns over undocumented employment and its impact on Phuket’s economy.

Targeted inspections and enforcement actions

Labour inspectors visited 18 construction projects and 12 hotels, checking work permits and immigration documents for more than 420 foreign nationals. Officers detained 37 individuals lacking valid employment authorization, including workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. The operation involved 54 personnel from the Employment Office, Immigration Bureau, and local police. Authorities confiscated forged documents and issued immediate stop-work orders at five locations.

Government response and industry implications

The Phuket Governor, Sophon Suwannarat, stated that the crackdown aligns with a national policy directive issued on 1 March 2026 to strengthen border controls and workplace inspections. Local business associations have been notified of stricter penalties, including fines up to 400,000 baht per illegal worker for employers. The Employment Office reported a 22% increase in permit applications since the campaign began. Officials plan to expand inspections to the Chalong and Rawai areas in April.
