Phuket Tightens Road Traffic Enforcement Ahead of Songkran

Phuket authorities have intensified road traffic enforcement ahead of Songkran, launching a campaign targeting accident prevention among residents, migrant workers, and tourists. At a meeting on April 2 chaired by Deputy Governor Teerapong Chuaychoo, the provincial Road Safety Command Center reviewed data showing 54 traffic fatalities in Phuket from January to March 2026. Officials identified young people aged 15–34 as the most at-risk group, with accident hotspots in Srisunthorn, Chalong, and Wichit subdistricts.

Targeted Enforcement and Safety Initiatives

Police have ordered each station in Phuket to designate at least two “risk points” for focused enforcement. Rental vehicle operators, particularly those serving tourists, will be subject to stricter checks.

The “Phuket Eye” traffic monitoring system will be deployed to track violations in real time. Analysis found foreign tourists frequently involved in nighttime accidents, often linked to unfamiliarity with local roads and rented large-engine motorcycles.

Officials have directed agencies to conduct safety outreach in migrant worker camps, emphasizing helmet use and discouraging drunk driving. District safety centers will compile five years of accident data to guide further interventions.
