Thai Woman Behind Offensive Note at Patong Shopping Mall, Not a Cambodian as Believed Online
Phuket — Patong Police have confirmed that the woman accused on social media of being Cambodian and insulting Thai people inside a well-known shopping mall is, in fact, a Thai national. The incident came to light on…
A Thai woman, not a Cambodian as widely claimed online, was identified as the author of an offensive note found inside Jungceylon Mall in Patong on April 3, Patong Police said. Officers in Phuket launched an immediate investigation after social media posts accused a Cambodian woman of insulting Thai citizens at the shopping center. Police confirmed that the woman is a 32-year-old Thai national working at a bar on Bangla Road.
Police Investigation and Motive Clarified
Patong Police, led by Acting Police Colonel Korakrit Khanthakrua, reviewed CCTV footage and interviewed both security staff and witnesses at the mall.
The woman was located still inside Jungceylon Mall. She does not have a permanent residence in Phuket.
During questioning, the woman told officers her handwritten note, which contained harsh language, was intended to deter theft of her bag, not to insult Thai people. She stated she had experienced two previous thefts and acted out of fear.
Authorities emphasized that her actions were not motivated by hostility toward Thai citizens, countering the narrative circulating on social media. The police issued this clarification to address public concern and prevent further misunderstanding.
