Tourists have been warned after 20 to 30 moon jellyfish were found floating near the surface and washed ashore at Ao Siam on Koh Racha Yai in Phuket on April 7, according to the Upper Andaman Coastal and Marine Resources Research Centre. The alert followed a report by staff at the Racha Islands protected area management centre in Rawai, Mueang district, who identified the jellyfish as a species commonly found in Thai waters.
Health Risks and Safety Advice
Officials said moon jellyfish carry mild venom, which can cause red rashes, burning sensations, and skin irritation, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin or heightened reactions to stings. The public and tourists have been advised not to touch the jellyfish directly.
Anyone experiencing unusual symptoms after contact should clean the affected area and seek medical attention as a precaution, authorities added.
Previous Jellyfish Incidents Around Phuket
Last week, Deputy Prime Minister and Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin issued a separate warning after poisonous fire jellyfish were detected in high density near Koh Aeo, Phuket. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources reported concentrations of about 100 fire jellyfish per square metre, floating at depths of 3 to 5 metres.
Surveys identified the fire jellyfish as belonging to the genus Pelagia, with contact causing stinging pain, burning, and red rashes. The department recommended pouring vinegar on stings for at least 30 seconds and seeking prompt medical treatment.
