UPDATE: Phuket Speedboat Explosion Claims Young Guide’s Life

A speedboat explosion at Ao Makham deep-sea port on Monday claimed the life of 23-year-old tour guide Kompetch Wandee, Phuket authorities confirmed. The incident, which occurred earlier in the day, left five others injured and prompted an intensive search operation after Mr. Kompetch was reported missing.

Search and Recovery Efforts

Rescue teams from the Kusoldharm Foundation conducted a dive operation and located Mr. Kompetch’s body inside the sunken vessel’s cabin by mid-afternoon. He was identified as a resident of Rassada subdistrict, Phuket.

Divers faced hazardous conditions during the recovery, as the boat had already sunk after the fire was contained.

Explosion and Immediate Response

Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum stated that CCTV footage showed the explosion and crew members escaping the burning speedboat. Bystanders attempted to control the flames using chemical fire extinguishers, but the fire could not be contained.

Responders towed the vessel away from the pier before it ultimately sank. No tourists were on board at the time, officials said.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Preliminary findings point to the boat’s engine system as the source of the explosion. Authorities are working to salvage the wreck for forensic examination.

The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of marine safety standards in Phuket’s tourism sector, with officials pledging a comprehensive investigation.
