Fire at Phuket City landfill sends black smoke billowing; residents advised to wear masks

A fire broke out at the Phuket City landfill on April 11, sending thick black smoke billowing above the facility and prompting officials to urge residents and passersby to wear masks. The blaze, reported at 3:10 pm, originated in the landfill area near the municipal incinerator, where waste from across Phuket is collected for disposal. Local authorities warned of health risks from smoke and airborne particles as the fire continued to burn.

Access challenges and emergency response

Fire trucks were unable to reach the burning waste due to piles of rubbish blocking entry, officials said. The smoke plume rose higher than a five-storey building and was visible from a distance.

Authorities identified the affected area as landfill pits four and five. A backhoe was deployed to clear a path through stacked garbage, aiming to allow fire crews access for suppression.

Initial reports noted a strong, acrid odor from burning refuse and sewage, which posed health hazards to nearby residents and emergency workers. Officials stated that prevailing winds carried the smoke out to sea, reducing impact on Phuket Town and surrounding neighborhoods.

Municipal officials requested that people near the Saphan Hin landfill and those passing through the area wear masks, especially during periods of strong wind. Residents were advised to monitor official announcements for further instructions.
