Thailand Reports 20 Deaths on the First Day of Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road Campaign

Thailand recorded 20 deaths and 132 injuries from 135 road accidents nationwide on April 10, the first day of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger campaign, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). The annual campaign, which includes Phuket, aims to curb traffic fatalities during the Thai New Year holiday period running through April 16.

Speeding accounted for 37.78% of crashes, while sudden lane cutting contributed to 22.96%, DDPM data showed. Motorcycles were involved in 70.49% of all incidents.

Most accidents occurred on straight roads (78.52%), with highways making up 48.15% and local subdistrict or village roads 20.74%. The peak period for accidents was between 3:01 PM and 6:00 PM, representing 21.48% of cases.

Trang and Songkhla provinces each reported eight accidents, the highest in the country. Prachinburi and Songkhla saw the most fatalities, with two deaths each.

The age group most affected was those aged 60–69, accounting for 18.42% of victims. Fifty-nine provinces reported no deaths on the first day.
