"Charlie Chaplin" possesses him! Surin man inspired by famous film creates "VIP Saleng" under Talee brand to fight fuel costs
'Charlie Chaplin' possesses him! Surin man inspired by famous film creates 'VIP Saleng' under Talee brand to fight fuel costs — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
A Surin farmer has drawn inspiration from Charlie Chaplin films to invent the “VIP Saleng” sidecar under the Talee brand, aiming to tackle high fuel costs in rural Thailand. On April 12, Sompong Butyaem, 45, unveiled his custom-designed three-wheeled sidecar in Ban Kham Noi Phatthana, Sangkha district, saying his innovation helps locals transport people and goods more efficiently—a concept now gaining interest as far as Phuket.
Design Features and Market Response
Sompong has over a decade of experience building sidecars, but began developing the “VIP” model in earnest three years ago. Each unit sells for 19,000 baht and is built to order, with an average of five units produced monthly.
The VIP Saleng features a reinforced frame, a weatherproof roof, and a flexible layout for both passengers and cargo. Customers bring their own motorcycles for installation, which has streamlined the production process.
The invention was inspired by a small-engine vehicle in a Charlie Chaplin film, leading Sompong to create an early prototype before establishing the Talee brand. He has since secured a patent for his design, and steady orders have provided him with reliable income and recognition for local craftsmanship.
