MP from the People's Party asks if the government will allow landfill fires to happen every year like this. — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
A Member of Parliament from the People’s Party publicly questioned the government on April 12 over recurring landfill fires, including recent incidents in Phuket. Puensak Janjumpee criticized what he called a lack of clear waste management policy and asked whether authorities would continue to allow annual landfill blazes.

Criticism of National Waste Management Failures
Puensak highlighted that Thailand has more than 2,000 unmanaged landfill sites nationwide, with over 150 landfill fires reported last year. He said these sites lack systems for leachate control and methane gas management, making them prone to repeated fires.
The MP described the issue as a “pollution time bomb,” arguing that the fires are not accidents but the result of systemic failure. He pointed to inadequate waste sorting, uncontrolled dumping, and weak law enforcement as factors leading to persistent toxic smoke exposure for residents.
Puensak referenced his earlier remarks during the government’s policy announcement on April 10, where he warned of unclear waste management strategies. He called for direct answers on how the government plans to prevent future landfill fires, particularly in areas like Phuket and Hat Yai.
