Thailand Reports a Total of 71 Deaths in Two Days of Songkran Seven Days of Danger Road Campaign

Thailand recorded 71 deaths and 317 injuries from 344 road accidents nationwide in the first two days of the Songkran Seven Days of Danger road campaign, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). The campaign, which began April 10 and includes Phuket, aims to curb traffic fatalities during the holiday period.

Accident Causes and Patterns

Excessive speed was the leading factor, contributing to 45.71% of incidents, while drunk driving accounted for 24.76%, officials said. Motorcycles were involved in 61% of all crashes.

Most accidents occurred on straight roads, making up 79.05% of cases. Nearly half took place on highways managed by the Department of Highways, and 25% happened on local roads in villages and subdistricts.

Provincial Breakdown and Demographics

Lampang province reported the highest number of accidents (12) and injuries (14), while Nakhon Ratchasima and Phitsanulok each recorded three fatalities, the most among provinces. Thirty-nine provinces reported zero fatalities during this period, according to DDPM.

The most dangerous time was between 9:01 a.m. and noon, accounting for 21.90% of incidents. People aged 20–29 were the most affected, representing 22.88% of those injured or killed.
