British man arrested after alleged drunk-driving crash at Chalong roundabout

Phuket police said they arrested a British man after he allegedly drove under the influence and crashed into traffic barriers at the Chalong Five-Way Roundabout.

According to Chalong Police, traffic officers managing rush-hour traffic saw a white car speeding recklessly into the roundabout, where it hit barriers and traffic cones and caused damage before fleeing toward Wiset Road in Rawai.

Police said they pursued the vehicle and stopped it at the Suksan 2 traffic lights. The driver, identified only as Mr. Islam, a British national, was taken into custody and brought to Chalong Police Station.

Police said a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 184 milligrams percent, above Thailand's legal limit. Officers filed an arrest record and charged him with offenses related to drunk driving and property damage.

No injuries were reported. Investigators are continuing to review the case and determine whether additional charges will be filed.
