Spotlight on Songkran 2026 Landmarks: Festive Atmosphere Across Thailand, 6.5 Million Expected to Join, 30 Billion Baht in Circulation

Thailand’s Songkran 2026 festival drew an estimated 6.5 million participants nationwide, with authorities projecting at least 30 billion baht in economic circulation during the holiday. Phuket joined cities across the country in marking the annual water festival on April 15, as government officials reported a 6% increase in overall attendance compared to last year.

Record Turnout at Festival Landmarks and Regional Hubs

Bangkok’s 94 official Songkran venues welcomed more than 3.1 million attendees, according to the city’s culture, sports, and tourism office. The Siam Square event alone saw over 1 million cumulative visitors, while Silom’s three-day celebration attracted 652,974 people.

In Chiang Mai, crowd estimates at the Rin Kham–Maya intersection surpassed 100,000 on April 14, with hotel occupancy rates reaching 70–80%. Local tourism authorities noted that this influx provided a crucial boost to the sector amid high oil prices and global economic uncertainty.

Khon Kaen’s famous Khao Niew Road hosted its signature “human wave” event, led by the Minister of Culture, drawing more than 50,000 participants along a 1.5-kilometre stretch. Organisers reported strong engagement from both domestic and international tourists, with foreign arrivals nationwide up 4% to 500,000 and generating roughly 8.1 billion baht in revenue.
