He was being held under a Phuket Provincial Court arrest warrant on charges of attempted murder and carrying a knife. Initial checks found no signs of a struggle or assault, and officers estimated he had been dead for no more than one hour.

CCTV timeline and custody investigation

Investigators said three detainees were inside the cell at the time. The two others told police they had been asleep for about two hours and did not witness the incident, waking only when called by officers and then seeing the body in a blind corner of the cell.

CCTV footage showed all three men were still in the cell as normal at about 11am. Police said the dead man appeared agitated, walked around, then went alone into the blind corner, where officers and the other detainees found him dead at about 11.40am.

Police alerted the station chief and called in a doctor, prosecutor, administrative officials and forensic officers to examine the scene. Relatives told investigators the man used drugs and often suffered anxiety, and said he had previously been arrested several times for disorderly conduct and had most recently faced a criminal damage case before the attempted murder warrant was issued over a stabbing on April 25.
