Security camera footage on May 7 appeared to show an Israeli family teaching children to shoplift at a convenience store in Patong, Phuket, according to the source report. The video allegedly captured adults passing snack bags to a boy and a young girl, who then concealed the items before moving to leave the shop.
Staff confrontation and wider reaction
The footage reportedly showed the mother handing a bag of snacks to her son, who quickly put it in his pocket before being told to leave the premises.
An elderly woman with the group then allegedly gave another bag of snacks to a young girl while shielding her from staff view before the child also slipped out.
Store employees noticed the behaviour and intercepted the family, the report said.
Staff said the group initially refused to return the stolen items, and an argument followed when employees warned they would call police. The tourists reportedly replied that they did not care.
The incident drew widespread criticism online over the conduct of some foreign tourists and how local laws are enforced in Thailand.
Many residents have also raised concern that similar incidents are being reported more often across multiple tourist destinations.
