The Commerce Ministry outlined a series of new strategies on April 26 aimed at easing living costs and boosting incomes for businesses and communities in Phuket and across Thailand. The ‘Thai Chuay Thai’ campaign, launched on April 1, features discounts of up to 58% on more than 3,000 consumer products at major retail chains.
SME Support and Digital Expansion
Sales of house-branded and second-tier items have risen by 16% since the campaign began, while major brand sales have declined, according to the Department of Business Development. Starting next month, SME producers will be able to distribute products on participating online platforms, with 2,000 SMEs targeted for recruitment.
In the initial phase, platforms will waive gross profit fees for SMEs. The ministry will subsidise delivery charges and provide buyers with a 100-baht discount coupon. Essential goods will be made available at district offices nationwide every Friday beginning May 1.
Agricultural Upgrades and Export Targets
The Commerce Ministry is working with the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry to enhance agricultural product quality and implement zoning for optimal crop and fertiliser use. Processing and geographical indication promotions aim to add value and manage surplus.
Community collection centres for agricultural products are being established, and SMEs are receiving training and franchise support to facilitate rapid growth and international expansion. The ministry also seeks a more balanced export portfolio, focusing on high local content products and new markets in Europe, Latin America, India, and Africa, while maintaining established markets in the US and China.
Technology upgrades include a rice dashboard for supply management and digital initiatives to streamline government processes.
