Divers enjoy newly installed Hanuman reef sculptures
The ‘Hanuman Nimitkai’ underwater sculpture project was completed on Apr 15 following several days of offshore installation work, with 73 structures placed on the seabed at depths of around 12 to 19 metres.
Divers are exploring the newly completed ‘Hanuman Nimitkai’ underwater sculpture project off Koh Racha Yai, Phuket, following the installation of 73 structures on the seabed between April 11 and 15, 2026. The site features 47 Hanuman-themed sculptures, 15 3D-printed fence units, and 11 artificial coral reef modules, all placed at depths ranging from 12 to 19 metres.
Artificial Reef Design and Environmental Goals
Officials said the structures are engineered to function as artificial reefs, offering new surfaces for coral attachment and attracting fish and other marine life. The installation aims to rehabilitate marine ecosystems and reduce pressure on natural reefs by providing an alternative site for divers and snorkellers.
The project is positioned as a resource for learning about marine conservation, targeting both visitors and local communities. Organisers stated that the site will help raise awareness of the importance of protecting Phuket’s underwater habitats.
Project Collaboration and Future Expansion
The initiative was developed through collaboration between the Rotary Foundation, District 3330 (Thailand), and District 3600 (South Korea), with support from government agencies, private sector partners, and the local community. Transportation of the structures occurred from April 7 to 10, followed by several days of offshore installation.
Plans are underway to expand the site into an “underwater art museum” featuring additional sculptures based on Ramayana characters such as Rama, Ravana, and Suvarnamatcha. Authorities describe the development as part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable marine tourism in Phuket while protecting and restoring the island’s natural resources.
