Police in Phuket were called to a Patong self-storage unit at Jungceylon shopping centre at about noon on May 13 after staff found five firearms and 100 rounds of ammunition inside a locker rented by a Swedish national. Patong Police investigators inspected the second-floor unit at MeSpace Self Storage Patong and found four Glock 9mm pistols, one CZ handgun and two 50-round boxes of 9mm ammunition.
Overdue rental led staff to open locker
Kirakorn Chiewchan, a representative of the storage company, told police the locker had been rented under the name Elmi Ahmed Mohamed.
He said the renter had failed to pay storage fees for more than 120 days and could not be contacted.
Staff opened the unit on May 12 under company procedure for overdue lockers.
They discovered the weapons inside and immediately notified police, officials said.
Police checking ownership of registered firearms
Pol Lt Col Surachat Thongyai, an investigating officer at Patong Police Station, received the report from the company at about 12pm on May 13.
Investigators from the Patong Police investigative unit then attended the scene to examine the cache.
Initial checks found that all five firearms carried registration numbers.
Police are investigating who owns the weapons and how they came to be stored in the locker.
