Governor orders urgent drain clearance to minimise flood risk
The directive, issued to all relevant agencies and local administrative bodies, requires immediate action to inspect and restore the island’s drainage network to full working condition as Phuket enters the rainy season.
Governor Nirat has ordered all local agencies to urgently clear drains across Phuket ahead of the rainy season, directing immediate inspections and restoration of the island’s drainage network as of April 23. The directive mandates the Department of Highways, Department of Rural Roads, Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization, and every municipality and subdistrict administrative body to deploy teams to address potential flood risks.
Agency Deployment and Specific Tasks
Engineering teams under each agency’s jurisdiction have been instructed to inspect and clear blocked pipes, grates, and manhole covers on roads. The goal is to ensure unimpeded water flow during heavy rainfall.
Officials began deploying personnel to high-risk and low-lying areas following the order. The agencies involved are required to restore all drainage systems to full working condition without delay.
Focus on Safety and Tourism
Governor Nirat emphasized that immediate drainage function during downpours is essential to prevent water accumulation on road surfaces. Effective drainage, he said, will reduce the risk of road accidents and keep traffic moving during adverse weather.
The governor also highlighted the importance of these efforts for maintaining Phuket’s standing as a leading tourist destination, especially as the island enters the wetter months. Authorities will continue to monitor weather conditions and adjust operations as needed to minimize flooding risks.
