Governor pushes EV buses

Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsithavorn on Friday led senior officials and business leaders on an inspection of the island’s electric vehicle (EV) bus system, underscoring the service as central to Phuket’s green transport strategy. The delegation, which included the heads of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO), Phuket Land Transport Office, and private sector partners, rode one of the EV buses to review progress and promote clean energy transit.

Fares, Route Expansion, and Cost Relief Measures

PPAO President Rewat Areerob confirmed that EV bus fares remain capped at B15 per route, with free rides provided for children, students, the elderly, people with disabilities, and monks. He announced plans to expand the network, including a new route linking Phuket International Airport to Rawai Beach and extended service to Koh Kaew, aiming to improve connections between northern districts and Phuket Town.

In anticipation of the new school term starting May 15, the PPAO and Phuket City Development Company (PKCD) will launch additional promotions and dedicated shuttle services for students. These measures are intended to help families manage higher transport costs caused by rising fuel prices.

Infrastructure and Energy Supply

Governor Nirat said over 40 EV buses are already operating on the island, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and insulating fares from global oil price fluctuations. Authorities are working to expand EV charging infrastructure to reach every community, aiming to build public confidence in electric vehicles.

The Provincial Electricity Authority has assured officials that Phuket’s power grid can support the growing number of electric vehicles. Officials say these combined initiatives position Phuket as a model for sustainable urban transport, with the EV bus network expected to reduce emissions and improve accessibility across the island.
