Heavy rain floods Phuket streets and disrupts Vegetarian Festival food event

Heavy rain flooded several areas of Phuket on 9 October, disrupting a Vegetarian Festival food event in the provincial capital after less than an hour of rainfall.

The rain began at around 11:30, with waterlogging reported on Ranong Road outside Jui Tui Shrine, where the “Vegan Street Food” event was being held. Bangkok Road and the Dao Rung area along Chaofa East Road were also affected.

Phuket authorities have warned of heavy to very heavy rain from 9 to 13 October. The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation command has prepared response measures and instructed agencies to monitor weather conditions and areas at risk.

The Thai Meteorological Department issued warning No. 247/2026 on 7 October, forecasting unsettled weather, thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy to very heavy rain in parts of southern Thailand. It said a monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon were continuing to affect the Andaman Sea, with waves potentially exceeding two metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms.

District offices, local administrative organisations, village heads and community leaders in Phuket have been instructed to monitor the risks of flash floods, forest runoff, waterlogging and landslides. Agencies have also been told to prepare personnel, heavy machinery and rescue equipment to assist residents around the clock.

Residents have been advised to follow weather alerts, take care when travelling on flooded roads and avoid high-risk areas during heavy rain.
