Heavy rain forecast for Bangkok; Andaman waves to reach 3 meters

Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 17 forecast continued rain across the country over the next 24 hours, with heavy falls in some areas, especially in the west, as the southwest monsoon strengthens over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand. Phuket is among the provinces on the southern west coast expected to see thunderstorms over 60% of the area, with heavy rain in places and temperatures of 23-26C overnight and 30-34C during the day.

The department warned of possible flash flooding and forest runoff, particularly along foothills, waterways and low-lying ground. It also advised caution over accumulated rainfall and changing weather conditions.

Andaman Sea conditions worsen as small boats told to stay ashore

In the upper Andaman Sea, waves are expected at 2-3 meters and above 3 meters in thundershowers. The lower Andaman and the upper Gulf are forecast at 1-2 meter waves, rising above 2 meters in storm cells.

Boat operators were told to proceed with caution and avoid sailing in thunderstorm areas. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea were advised to remain ashore.

Bangkok and surrounding provinces are forecast to have thunderstorms across 60% of the area with isolated heavy rain, temperatures of 26-28C and 35-37C, and southwest winds at 10-20km/h. On the southern west coast, from Phang Nga northward, winds are expected at 20-40km/h, while from Phuket southward they are forecast at 15-35km/h.
