Heavy rain, strong winds forecast across Thailand; Phuket among southern areas hit — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 13 forecast heavy rain and strong winds across 45 provinces, with Phuket included in the Andaman coast areas expected to see thunderstorms over 60% of the region in the next 24 hours. The department said the South faces heavy to very heavy rain in some places, while Bangkok and surrounding areas are also forecast to receive rain over 60% of their area.
On the west coast of the South, Phuket, Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun were named as provinces likely to see thunderstorms, with isolated heavy rain. Temperatures there are forecast at 24-27C minimum and 33-35C maximum, with easterly winds at 15-30 km/h.
Seas rougher in storms, heavier rain due later this week
In the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, waves are expected at about 1 meter, rising above 2 meters in thundershowers, prompting a warning for boaters to proceed with caution and avoid storm areas. For the upper Gulf, waves are forecast at about 2 meters during the stronger weather period later this week.
The department said rainfall will increase from May 14 to May 18, with heavy to very heavy falls expected in parts of the North, Central, East and South as a strong low-pressure cell over the lower Bay of Bengal moves north and the southwest monsoon strengthens. During that period, Andaman waves are forecast at 2-3 meters and above 3 meters in thundershowers.
