Heavy rain warning issued nationwide; Bangkok faces 60% chance of storms

Thailand’s Meteorological Department on May 5 warned of heavy rain nationwide over the next 24 hours, with upper Thailand facing thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and isolated heavy downpours, while Phuket is forecast to see storms across 40% of the Andaman coast. Bangkok and nearby provinces face a 60% chance of thunderstorms and some heavy rain, the department said, as hot conditions persist in many areas.

The weather pattern is being driven by a high-pressure system, or cold air mass from China, spreading over the Northeast and the South China Sea, officials said. They advised people in affected areas to avoid open ground, large trees, unstable structures and billboards, while farmers were told to protect fruit trees, crops and livestock.

Phuket forecast and southern seas

On the southern west coast, including Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun, thunderstorms are expected in 40% of the area, with temperatures of 24-26C overnight and 34-36C during the day. Easterly winds are forecast at 10-30 kilometers per hour, with waves below 1 meter but rising above 2 meters in storm areas.

The department said the South will see more rain and isolated heavy falls from May 6-8 as an easterly wave moves across the lower region. In the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, waves are expected around 1 meter and higher than 2 meters during thunderstorms, with mariners urged to navigate carefully and avoid storm zones.
