Hot days, afternoon storms and strong winds forecast across Thailand

Hot days, afternoon storms and strong winds forecast across Thailand — confirmed details at this stage for Phuket readers.

Hot days, afternoon storms and strong winds forecast across Thailand

The Meteorological Department on May 2 forecast hot daytime weather across Thailand over the next 24 hours, with summer storms bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible lightning in the upper country, while Phuket and the wider South face isolated thunderstorms. The forecast covers 6am today to 6am tomorrow and warns that hot to very hot conditions remain in place across northern regions.

Forecasters said the unstable pattern is being driven by weakening high pressure, or a cold air mass from China, over the Northeast and the South China Sea, together with southwesterly and southeasterly winds over upper Thailand. Dust and haze accumulation in the upper country was rated from good to moderate because of rain in some areas.

Phuket and regional weather breakdown

On the Andaman coast, the west coast of the South, including Phang Nga, Phuket, Trang and Satun, is forecast to see thunderstorms over 30% of the area. Temperatures are expected at 24-27C overnight and 36-38C by day, with easterly winds at 10-30 kilometres per hour and waves below 1 meter, rising above 1 meter in thundershowers.

The east coast of the South is also forecast for thunderstorms over 30% of the area, with temperatures of 23-25C and 34-39C. Winds there are expected at 15-30km/h, with seas around 1 meter and above 2 meters in storm areas.

People were advised to avoid open ground, large trees, unstable structures and billboards, while farmers were urged to protect fruit trees, crops and livestock.
