48-hour alcohol sales ban under way in Phuket and nationwide

Police have reminded the public and businesses that Thailand’s 48-hour ban on alcohol sales is in effect from 12:01am on 29 July until midnight on 30 July, including in Phuket.

Under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, sales are prohibited nationwide during Asarnha Bucha Day and Khao Phansa, except at venues specifically exempted under the law. Phuket Provincial Police previously clarified that the exemptions cover only licensed entertainment venues, hotels and international airports.

Convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and other licensed premises found selling alcohol in breach of the ban face up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to B10,000, or both.

The Royal Thai Police said officers had been ordered to increase patrols and inspections during the long holiday period, focusing on theft, drug offences, illegal weapons, street racing and other crimes. Police will also work with local authorities, volunteers and community networks at homes, transport hubs, tourist attractions, hotels and other busy locations.

Traffic and Highway Police have been instructed to assist holiday travel from 25 July to 2 August, including by opening reversible traffic lanes where necessary and deploying officers at major intersections, tourist attractions, religious sites and transport terminals.

Motorists have been urged to drive carefully. Assistance is available 24 hours a day through the Highway Police hotline on 1193, Traffic Police on 1197, or Royal Thai Police emergency numbers 191 and 1599.
