Icelandic businessman accused of snatching taxi driver’s bag in Phuket

An Icelandic businessman has been accused of snatching a taxi driver’s handbag in Phuket, in a case that could carry a prison term of up to five years under Thai law.

According to the source, the incident happened after the passenger woke up from a drunken nap during a taxi ride on the island. Near a local temple, he allegedly panicked and demanded to know where his wife was, even though he was said to be travelling alone.

The female driver reportedly sounded her horn for help, and a passing van driver intervened.

The businessman denies stealing the bag. He claims there was a misunderstanding and says he was looking for his wife’s belongings. He also alleges he is being financially exploited in a tourist scam.

The source said he now faces a charge of snatching property, which is punishable by up to five years in prison in Thailand.
