Indian Embassy monitors Phuket probe after cafe collapse kills tourist

The Indian Embassy in Thailand said it is closely monitoring a Phuket investigation after four Indian tourists lost consciousness at a cafe in Kamala early on May 9, 2026, and one man later died. The embassy said it is in direct contact with Thai authorities over the incident, which began after a group of five Indian men arrived at the cafe at about 11pm on May 8.

At about 1:54am, four men began collapsing one after another for no immediately apparent reason, according to reports. Cafe staff called emergency services, and rescuers took three men to Patong Hospital and one to Thalang Hospital.

Victim dies after transfer to Vachira Phuket Hospital

One member of the group, 26-year-old Kushagra Agarwal, was later pronounced dead at Vachira Phuket Hospital at about 2:30pm on May 9. Two of the unconscious men had been transferred there after developing coma-like symptoms.

The fifth man was not affected and told investigators he did not know what had happened to his companions. The other three patients were later reported to be in stable condition.

Police review evidence as forensic tests continue

Kamala Police are leading the inquiry, with investigators including Pol Lt. Wichayut Damphueak working with forensic pathologists to determine the cause of death. Police said all four patients were unconscious and unable to give statements when officers arrived.

Thai media reported officers are interviewing cafe staff and reviewing security footage while awaiting autopsy and laboratory results. Authorities have publicly described the case as mysterious and have not confirmed a cause, while the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said embassy officials are also in contact with the dead man’s family and are following the medical care of the surviving tourists.
