An Indian tourist died after four members of a group collapsed at Cafe del Mar Phuket on Kamala Beach early Saturday, Kamala Police Chief Pol Col Anurak Prinyasathirakul confirmed. Police said the report was received at 2:06am on May 9, after the group had arrived at the venue at about 11pm on Friday and four men began losing consciousness at about 1:54am.
Emergency responders from the Kamala Tambon Administrative Organisation gave first aid at the scene before taking three victims to Patong Hospital and one to Thalang Hospital.
Police identified the five Indian nationals as Kushagra Agarwal, Rahul Agrawal, another man also named Rahul Agrawal, Agarwal Aman and Aryan Verma.
Hospital tests found drugs in all four victims
Pol Col Anurak said hospital tests later found drugs in the blood of all four men who collapsed, with overdose considered the likely cause.
He said the specific type, kind and amount of drugs could not yet be determined pending further medical examination results.
The police chief also addressed confusion over the identities listed in the case file, saying two of the men share the same name because they are related and from the same family, while the other is a friend.
Aryan Verma was the only member of the group reported not to have shown any abnormal symptoms.
Two victims were transferred in critical condition
Later on Saturday, Patong Hospital told investigators that two victims, identified as Kuchakorn Agrawal and Rahul Agrawal, were in critical condition and had been transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further treatment.
Police were later notified that Kuchakorn Agrawal had died at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
Officers initially found the four affected tourists unconscious and unable to give statements.
The Indian Embassy was informed, and a forensic pathologist was assigned to conduct detailed autopsies as investigators continued examining the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
