The Embassy of Israel in Thailand warned Israeli nationals in Phuket on May 7 to obey local laws after provincial authorities reportedly ordered stricter enforcement against foreigners on the island. The Hebrew-language notice, posted on the Israel in Thailand Facebook page, said violators would face the maximum penalties allowed under Thai law.
It said serious cases could lead to visa revocation and deportation proceedings. The embassy also singled out driving without a licence, saying there would be zero tolerance and that offenders would be sent to court without exception.
Embassy warning details and online reaction
The post said authorities also planned to increase awareness by giving tourists more information about local laws and regulations. It quickly drew wide attention online, with many commenters backing tougher action against foreigners who break Thai law.
Some responses shifted to Thailand’s visa-free policy, with users calling for the programme to be reviewed or scrapped. The embassy has issued similar advice before, including new behaviour guidance last year after criticism over the conduct of some Israeli visitors in Pai district in Mae Hong Son.
Previous scrutiny and recent Phuket arrest
That earlier move followed complaints in the northern town, including concern over the establishment of a Jewish synagogue. Thai law enforcement officials and Avi Bitton, a senior adviser to Israel’s Security Council, also met in Phuket last year to discuss complaints involving Israeli tourists in Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, Phuket and Pai.
Bitton reportedly supported Thailand’s right to take firm legal action against Israeli nationals found breaking the law, including those involved in illegal businesses. In a recent Phuket case, police arrested an Israeli national on April 8 for allegedly running a travel agency through a Thai nominee, with Department of Tourism and Tourist Police officers finding two companies in breach of the law: Gmat Hospitality and Andaman Sunday.
