The Kathu power substation was officially opened on May 6 in Phuket, with Provincial Electricity Authority Governor Mongkol Treekitjanon presiding alongside Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn and Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation President Rewat Areerob. Senior officials and private sector representatives also attended the launch of the new facility in Kathu District.
Governor Nirat said Kathu has become a key economic hub as Phuket’s economy continues to grow. He said the substation would strengthen confidence among investors and support further tourism and real estate expansion.
B247M facility adds 100MVA and remote-control capability
Dr Mongkol said the substation was built at a cost of B247 million and uses an indoor Gas Insulated Substation system aimed at high safety standards and efficient land use.
The facility has two 50-megavolt-ampere transformers, giving it a combined capacity of 100MVA. It also includes an automated management system that allows remote operation, reducing manual control while improving accuracy and reliability.
A 20-kilowatt solar rooftop system was installed to supply electricity for internal use. Officials said the system would help cut greenhouse gas emissions and support carbon neutrality goals.
The substation can distribute electricity through 10 circuits at 33,000 volts. Coverage includes Kathu Waterfall, government offices, Loch Palm Golf Club, Red Mountain Golf Club and nearby cultural tourism sites.
