Kief seized at unlicensed cannabis shop in Koh Kaew

Phuket officials seized kief and food products containing cannabis extracts during an inspection of an unlicensed cannabis shop in Koh Kaew, according to an official report of the raid.

The inspection was led by Phuket Deputy Governor Khetarat Chansilp, with officials from the Phuket City District Administration and the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office. Licensed cannabis outlets in the area were also inspected.

Authorities said cannabis extracts and kief containing more than 0.2% THC by weight are classified as Category 5 narcotics under Thai law. The products at the unlicensed shop were allegedly being sold without the required licence, prescription or approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

Kief is a concentrated cannabis product made from the resin-rich trichomes on cannabis flowers. Public health officials will conduct further testing of the extracts, the report said.

The inspections are part of an ongoing Phuket crackdown covering cannabis businesses and other law-enforcement areas, including narcotics and firearms. Khetarat said the inspections were intended both to prosecute violations and to bring cannabis businesses into compliance with the law.

“Businesses that invest and comply with the law must not be disadvantaged compared to those who evade or violate the law,” he said.
