A Love Andaman speedboat caught fire while moored off Ao Makham in Phuket at 5.25pm on May 10, leaving the vessel almost completely destroyed, police said. The boat was floating near Visith Panwa Pier in Wichit when the blaze broke out, and no injuries or deaths were reported.
Wichit Police were alerted by the Phuket Tourist Assistance Center, also known as the Pearl Center, before dispatching investigators and a rapid-response patrol with a Provincial Administration Organization fireboat and support from the Third Naval Area Command.
Fire crews contained blaze in about 20 minutes
Officials found the speedboat burning heavily about 200 meters from the pier in the middle of Ao Makham. Fire crews moved in by boat and brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.
After the flames were extinguished, only the fiberglass frame of the vessel remained floating on the water. Police said the damage assessment is being handled with the boat owner.
Earlier that day, the speedboat had taken passengers to Phi Phi Island in Krabi. After completing the trip in the afternoon, the captain moored the boat, shut down all onboard systems and went ashore.
Police said the cause of the fire was not immediately known. Forensic officers are examining the scene with Wichit Police investigators.
