Magnitude 4.4 earthquake recorded 485km southwest of Phuket

Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division reported a magnitude 4.4 earthquake north of Indonesia’s Sumatra on 28 September 2026, about 485 kilometres southwest of Muang district in Phuket.

The earthquake occurred at 9.43pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres. The division said Phuket should remain under monitoring after a red-code event was recorded in northern Sumatra.

No earthquake in Thailand or nearby areas had appeared in the division’s records between midnight and 9.29am on 29 September, according to the report. Globally, the strongest earthquake listed during the monitored period was a magnitude 5.3 event north of Svalbard on 28 September.
