An 89-year-old man died after being hit by a motorcycle while crossing Thepkrasattri Rd in Thalang, with police continuing their investigation into the crash.

An 89-year-old man died after being struck by a motorcycle while crossing Thepkrasattri Rd in Thalang on Tuesday morning, police said.

Thalang Police were notified of the collision at about 6:45am after a report from the 191 emergency radio centre. Officers were sent to the outbound lanes of Thepkrasattri Rd opposite the SuperCheap Muang Mai store, where police said the crash had happened about 10 minutes earlier.

Police identified the deceased as Wichian Kreuphanich, 89, a resident of Thepkrasattrri Subdistrict.

According to the police report, Mr Wichian had parked his motorcycle on the outbound side of the road and was attempting to cross to the inbound side to buy goods. Police said he was a regular customer at Muang Mai Market each morning.

As he crossed the road, he was hit by a Yamaha motorcycle ridden by Ronnaporn Phrommuang, 44, from Trang.

Both men were taken to Thalang Hospital. Hospital staff later confirmed that Mr Wichian had died from his injuries.

Rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation said they arrived at the scene at 5:55am and found Mr Wichian unconscious, without a pulse and not breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started before he was transferred to hospital.

The foundation reported that Mr Wichian had suffered a severe laceration to his left arm and a serious injury to his right leg. Mr Ronnaporn sustained a deep head laceration, facial injuries and complained of neck pain. He was conscious when taken to Thalang Hospital for treatment.

Police said the investigation into the fatal collision is continuing. The case is being handled by Pol Lt Natta Sripakorn of Thalang Police Station.
